I’m going HOME!

maui

For the first time in over thirteen years, I am going back home! A wonderful couple has hired me to photograph their wedding on Maui in just a couple of weeks, and I’ve been absolutely giddy in anticipation.

I was born in Honolulu, and my mom and I moved to Maui when I was about three years old. I lived on Maui until age twenty, when the family moved to Southern California to make a new life for all of us. I have not been back to Maui since we left in December of 1993. It’s really hard to wrap my head around the fact that it has been THAT LONG since I lived there, it’s been THAT LONG since I smelled the sugar cane burning, since I ate plate lunches at local dive restaurants, since I saw the deep indigo of the ocean surrounding my island.

I’m really a little nervous about this trip. This will be the furthest I’ve ever traveled with all of my gear, and I have some very high expectations for my own work from this trip. I want to pull out all the stops, make images that not only delight my clients, but also that evoke my own memories, and the *feeling* of home. Which is indescribable. But maybe I’ll be able to speak with my images. Maybe I can tell a story. I really hope so.
